No Description Available Henry Rider Haggard was born at Bradenham, Norfolk, to Sir William Meybohm Rider Haggard, a barrister, and Ella Doveton, an author and poet. He was the eighth of ten children. He was initially sent to Garsington Rectory in Oxfordshire to study under the Reverend H.J. Graham but, unlike his older brothers who graduated from various Public Schools, he ended up attending Ipswich Grammar School. This was because his father, who regarded him as somebody who was not going to amount to much, could no longer afford to maintain his expensive private education. After failing his army entrance exam he was sent to a private ‘crammer’ in London to prepare for the entrance exam for the British Foreign Office, which in the end he never sat. Instead Haggard’s father sent him to Africa in an unpaid position as assistant to the secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of Natal, Sir Henry Bulwer. It was in this role that Haggard was present in Pretoria for the official announcement of the British annexation of the Boer Republic of the Transvaal. In fact, Haggard raised the Union Flag and was forced to read out much of the proclamation following the loss of voice of the official originally entrusted with the duty. As a young man, Haggard fell deeply in love with Lilith Jackson, whom he intended to marry once he obtained paid employment in South Africa. In 1878 he became Registrar of the High Court in the Transvaal, but when he sent his father a letter telling him that he intended to return to England in order to marry Lilith Jackson his father replied that he forbade it until he had made a career for himself. In 1879 he heard that Lilith had married someone else. When he eventually returned to England he married a friend of his sister, Mariana Louisa Margitson and brought her back to Africa. Later they had a son named Jock (who died of measles at the age of 10) and three daughters. Returning again to England in 1882, the couple settled in Ditchingham, Norfolk. Later he lived in Kessingland and had connections with the church in Bungay, Suffolk. He turned to the study of law and was called to the bar in 1884. His practice of law was somewhat desultory, and much of his time was taken up by the writing of novels. Heavily influenced by the larger-than-life adventurers he met in Colonial Africa, most notably Frederick Selous and Frederick Russell Burnham, the great mineral wealth discovered in Africa, and the ruins of ancient lost civilizations in Africa such as Great Zimbabwe, Haggard created his Allan Quatermain adventures. Three of his books, The Wizard (1896), Elissa; the doom of Zimbabwe (1899), and Black Heart and White Heart; a Zulu idyll (1900) are dedicated to Burnham's daughter, Nada, the first white child born in Bulawayo, herself named after Haggard's 1892 book Nada the Lily. Years later, when Haggard was a successful novelist, he was contacted by his former love, Lilith Jackson. She had been deserted by her husband, who had left her penniless and infected her with syphilis, from which she eventually died. It was Haggard who paid her medical bills. These details were not generally known until the publication of Haggard's 1983 biography by D. S. Higgins. Haggard was heavily involved in agricultural reform and was a member of many Commissions on land use and related affairs, work that involved several trips to the Colonies and Dominions. He was made a Knight Bachelor in 1912, and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919. He stood unsuccessfully for parliament as a candidate for the Conservative Party. This is a rousing yarn that comports pretty well with much of the admittedly sketchy historical record. It is told from the viewpoint of a hidden prince of the pre-Ptolemaic Egyptiian royal family who is chosen as the champion of the old religion and the old nobility. He is required to insinuate himself into Cleopatra's court and overthrow her, but alas, he is fascinated by her, and then betrayed by a woman whose love he spurns. The main story then begins, with his path to redemption told along with the the more familiar tale of Antony and Cleopatra. This is a rich, complex tale, with good characterization, including the fascinating and ultimately doomed queen. Highly recommended for its verve and color, as well as a strong narrative drive. One of H. Rider Haggard's best.Product details

My daughter became very interested in the life of Cleopatra as we were reading a book about ancient civilizations, how their governments worked, why they worshiped particular images and gods, etc.
She thought Cleopatra was amazing because she was a very powerful woman who lived many hundreds of years ago, and so far in her schooling, very few women were spoken of as powerful leaders. So, we jumped right in and for Halloween, she dressed as a stunning Queen of the Nile, even though we realized the real Egypian Queen probably didn't actually look like Elizabeth Taylor)
She was asking so many questions about how she became powerful, what did an Egyptian queen do in her daily life, in what kind of a house did she live, did she have a husband or children, and especially, why did she die by a snake bite. All the answers I found were very complicated and too academically worded for even a very curious and bright ten-year-old fourth grader. So...we looked on for a childrens' book about Cleopatra and found this great edition by Adele Geras.
The pictures in "Cleopatra" are fabulous! They are colorful and lovely to look at. The cover has a jeweled eye and is big and bright. It is written as diary entries in the voice of a young girl living at the time of Cleopatra and her family. We haven't been reading it straight through, and that is part of what makes it so great; book you can open to any page, or any particlarly interesting event, and easily find great facts written in a very engaging manner for young readers, (as well as their parents).
I highly recommend this book, it is worth very penny. It will hang around your bookshelf long after fourth grade. I, too, find myself curiously flipping through the pages and reading it with great interest.
I love both historical fiction as well as not fiction. This was very interresting book but very hard one to read. It is written in old style English which gives it wonderfull authenticity yet is so hard to read. Lucky for me that the kindle has such a convenient dictionary given that English is my second language. That said, I realy liked the book and I glad I was able to finish it. I recomend it to all who are interrested history and/or world religions.
This is the epic story of the pharaoh who never was. The story of Harmachis and Cleopatra is vivid and intense, and involves love gone wrong in so many ways.
With the exception of a short prologue, the entire book is given as a translation of three ancient scrolls. Here's a sentence, to give you an idea of the style "Then in life mayst thou be wretched, and after death may Osiris refuse thee, and the judges of Amenti give judgment against thee, and Set and Sekhet torment thee, till such time as thy sin is purged and the Gods of Egypt, called by strange names, are once more worshipped in the Temples of Egypt, and the Staff of the Oppressor is broken, and the footsteps of the Foreigner are swept clean, and the thing is accomplished as thou in thy weakness shalt cause it to be done." It gives the story a certain Biblical weightiness, and isn't as intrusive as it might seem, but be prepared. That aside, it's a great character study of strong personalities against a violent historical backdrop.
This novel begins with grand adventure. Someone is sneaking into an Egyptian tomb, confronting a mummy, and looking for secrets. It reminds me of the scene where the main character in another adventure thriller lowers himself into the tomb of a long-dead Arab sheik. I don't remember the name of it. But it's probably from the same time period. It seems that the Victorian and Edwardian eras had all the really good stuff. Everything since then has been only a shadow of former glory when it comes to novels, especially adventure, mystery, and thriller novels. Everything now is gritty. Back then it was romantic.

Haggard presents the familiar tale of Antony and Cleopatra through the eyes of a rival who seeks Egypt's throne but falls, unrequited, under her spell. The story appears on rolls of papyrus found in the protagonist's tomb. As a result, Haggard abandons his typical prose for a biblical style. After adjusting to it, I thought the formal writing enhanced the story.
The other reviewer did a great job. I agree totally. Normally I would not be attracted to another story about Cleopatra, but I love Haggard's novels, his writing style, character development. I bought this for my and was surprised at the wonder, complex, multi-dimensional story. Hard to put down. Characters come alive and you experience the mysteries of ancient Egypt. Haggard is a first class writer. Tolkein read Haggard as a boy. This is one I will re-read from time to time. No longer copywrited, I got it for 99 cents for my .
Generally, I enjoy H. Rider Haggard. But I felt that there was entirely too much 'filler' in the form of worshipful praise for the Egyptian Gods. It became tedious and I almost stopped reading before I finished. I'll still read other H. Rider Haggard novels.
